Where to plant

Choosing the right spot is important for your Daphne to thrive with the right amount of light, shelter, and drainage.

Daphne is a hardy evergreen shrub known for its glossy leaves and powerful fragrance. Here’s a care guide for growing your Daphne:

Plant gift

STEP 1

Prepare your new Daphne

Unpack your plant as soon as you can — it may be thirsty for a drink if the soil feels dry, and it will be missing the light. Give it a gentle water and place it somewhere bright and sheltered.

Planting a gift

STEP 2

Give it space and room to grow

When planting, choose a space about x2 wider than the pot all the way round. Daphne likes to stay put once settled, so pick a final position rather than moving it later.

Over time, it can grow to around 1 m tall and 1 m wide.

Sun for plants

STEP 3

Give it some sun

Your Daphne enjoys partial shade or dappled sun, ideally protected from cold winds. A spot that gets morning light and afternoon shade is perfect. Avoid full, hot sun all day or deep shade.

North- or east-facing gardens are often ideal for Daphne.

Soil types

Step 4

Check your soil

Daphne prefers well-drained, rich soil that stays slightly moist but never soggy.

It dislikes heavy, wet ground — if your soil is clay or doesn’t drain well, plant your Daphne in a container or raised bed with compost and grit mixed in.

Best soil types:

Loamy / light / well-drained / moist but not waterlogged.

Plant border

Step 5

Position in border

Daphne is best planted near a path or doorway where you can enjoy its sweet fragrance through the colder months.

Place it towards the front or middle of a border where it won’t be crowded by taller plants. It’s a lovely choice for lifting winter beds and providing evergreen structure.

Care for your Daphne

By following these care tips, your Daphne will thrive and fill your garden with beautiful scent and glossy green leaves all year round.

  • Watering

Water your Daphne regularly during dry spells, especially in the first year while it’s establishing. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.

Avoid letting the plant dry out completely.

  • Pruning

Daphne needs very little pruning. Remove any damaged or dead branches after flowering in spring. Avoid hard pruning — it can weaken the plant.

Simply tidy up lightly to maintain shape.

  • Fertillising

Feed lightly in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser (for example, 10-10-10). Too much feed can harm roots, so use sparingly.

Top up the soil each year with compost or mulch to keep nutrients in.

  • Pests & Diseases

Daphne is mostly trouble-free, but keep an eye out for aphids and vine weevil larvae (which can nibble roots in pots).

Check leaves regularly and remove pests by hand or with gentle organic methods.

    Learn: Protect from bugs
  • Protect

Daphne is frost-hardy, but in very cold or windy spots, protect it with garden fleece or move container plants against a wall. Avoid disturbing roots once planted.
